The Ambassador of Italy to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, the Carabiniere Vittorio Iacovacci and the WFP driver Mustapha Milambo were tragic victims of a violence that we cannot understand and accept. Brave and committed colleagues died together while working at the service of their country and the international community, while promoting, in the context of a development-aid mission, our shared European values. On behalf of the European Union and its institutions represented here in London, I would like to express our deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences to our Italian colleagues in the UK, as well as to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to the friends and families of Luca, Vittorio and Mustapha.
Although I had never met Luca, as an EU citizen I am proud of his achievements and his work. As a diplomat, I am sure Luca's example will inspire younger generations of colleagues who have made the same career choice. His premature demise also reminds us all of the challenges that diplomacy puts before every step of our professional and personal lives. We will treasure these lessons and stand together to continue Luca, Vittorio and Mustapha’s work.
