The program has a very important innovative element: besides the construction of additional infrastructures – i.e. 60-70 Km of all-weather feeder roads and the completion of the 160 m long Nyamlel Bridge – it proceeds hand in hand with a complex range of supporting activities, the so-called accompanying measures.
Accompanying measures, mean the promotion of food security, which will be prominently supported by linking the producers to markets and in particular to the WFP-led aggregation centres, that proved already to be successful in other State of the country.
Accompanying measures also include those activities addressing fundamental values and priority issues that are critical for a sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development: promotion of social cohesion, mitigation of conflicts, peacebuilding, gender equality and women empowerment, human rights protection, job creation especially for youths and women, enhanced incomes for poor vulnerable households and, last but not least, environmental safeguard.
This renewed EU-WFP partnership is actually a good testimony of the long standing collaboration between EU and the WFP in South Sudan and this project re-affirms the EU’s continued support to the people of South Sudan through its wide range of Rural Development and Resilience building Programmes - with investments in infrastructures, agriculture, livelihoods and resilience – and accounting for over 50% of the total EU funding in the country.
