On 23 and 24 November 2020, the United Nations, Afghanistan and Finland will host the 2020 Ministerial Afghanistan Conference. This will an opportunity for the international community donors to reaffirm their continuous support and determination to promote a peaceful, democratic, sovereign and prosperous Afghanistan, deserved and long awaited by its people.
Ahead of the Conference, the EU and its Member States, together with the key international donors to Afghanistan, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan and Norway, together representing about 80% of all official aid to Afghanistan, have jointly and unanimously adopted political and governance conditions on which will be anchored our future international political and financial support to Afghanistan. These conditions are outlined in the document entitled “Key Elements for Sustained International Support to Peace and Development in Afghanistan”. These elements have been shared with both Delegations of the intra-Afghan negotiations at the beginning of November 2020.
The EU and its international partners are committed to give a positive impetus to the peace process and express our solidarity towards the Afghan people and to the Republic through our pledge of financial support within certain systems of governance.
Our renewed support will aim to promote an inclusive Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process that build on political and social achievements of the last 19 years, and lead to a sustainable peace in Afghanistan, opening the way to development and prosperity in the country and beyond.
