Statements by the Spokesperson

The release of detainees by the Yemeni parties on 15 and 16 October, in line with the agreement reached in Geneva last month, is a crucial step in the implementation of the 2018 Stockholm Agreement. It is also a reminder that progress can still be made through negotiation and compromise.

The European Union commends the work carried out by the International Committee of the Red Cross as well as the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths and his office for facilitating the release of the detainees and their reunification with their families.

The EU also welcomes the Yemeni parties’ commitment to continue negotiations on the Prisoner Exchange Agreement. This spirit of conciliation should now translate into an overall political solution of the conflict in Yemen. The finalisation of the UN-led Joint Declaration and the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement are crucial cornerstones in this regard.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Yemen, the EU has reiterated that the way out of the crisis can only be a political solution. All parties should continue to engage constructively with the UN Special Envoy towards a nationwide ceasefire and a resumption of political talks. The EU fully supports the UN-led process.
