EU Ambassador to FSM Presents his Credentials

08/10/20 – Suva, Fiji - The Ambassador of the European Union for the Pacific, His Excellency Sujiro Seam presented his letters of credence to the President of the Federated States of Micronesia, His Excellency David Panuelo, in a virtual ceremony today.

During the credential ceremony, Ambassador Seam stressed the long-standing relation and friendship between the European Union and the Federated States of Micronesia, based on a legacy of common values, shared goals and cooperation.

''The Federated States of Micronesia and the EU have developed a close relationship in the Pacific, aiming to promote peace and security, human rights, democracy and good governance, economic and social development, climate change adaptation, risk mitigation and environmental protection.’’ Ambassador Seam told President Panuelo.

''The European Union is proud to support key priorities identified by the Federated States of Micronesia. Climate change, sustainable energy supply, disaster risk reduction and environmental protection remains the priority sector under 11th European Development Fund.’’ added Ambassador Seam. As recently as August this year, the European Union committed €11.6 million in support to the Federated States of Micronesia. The programme, delivered through the Pacific Community North Pacific Office, will increase the country's capacity to promote, deliver and sustain renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Ambassador Seam congratulated President Panuelo and his people for keeping the coronavirus out of the borders to date and reiterated the European Union’s support to the Federated States of Micronesia during these difficult times.  The Federated States of Micronesia is one of the 15 countries in the Pacific benefitting from the Team Europe response to COVID-19.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the Federated States of Micronesia for taking the innovative step to allow the presentation of letters of credence for Ambassadors accredited in Pohnpei via videoconference.  Digitalization is not only a priority for the European Union, it is also a formidable tool for the future development of the Pacific.” concluded Ambassador Seam.
