EU for New Yorkers: Supporting the homeless & hungry during COVID-19

10.09.2020

10 September 2020, New York – With nearly 2 million New Yorkers, including almost 800,000 children, facing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, since August the EU Delegation to the UN in New York has partnered with the Coalition for the Homeless to support the neediest residents of our host city.

This project redirects resources from scheduled events which could not take place in person due to the pandemic.

Over the course of the several weeks in August and September, the European Union Delegation will support outreach efforts by the Coalition for the Homeless by providing food assistance for the homeless and hungry residents of New York at mobile distribution points around the city.

The first event kicked off on 14 August, during one of the hottest summers on record, when the homeless population is particularly vulnerable. In the weeks to come we will be providing essentials such as water, nutritious meals and fruits that can be picked up safely around New York City via the Coalition for the Homeless vans.

No one is safe anywhere until everyone is safe everywhere. It’s time to show our gratitude and solidarity with New York by giving back to its neediest.

Ambassador Silvio Gonzato, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to the UN

Working with the Coalition for the Homeless, which has pivoted to mobile distribution at points around the city, enables the EU Delegation to reach vulnerable populations and to uphold our global commitment to fighting food insecurity.
