Recent developments in Bolivia, with discrepancies between the political actors on the election date, are increasing tensions that are negatively affecting the country's stability and social peace at a crucial moment, when Bolivia is led by an interim government and elections have been postponed twice so far due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Bolivians are suffering from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, with an already strained healthcare system, now additionally struggling also from the lack of supplies and oxygen running short.

Peaceful, credible, inclusive and transparent elections are important for Bolivian people. The Supreme Electoral Court has initiated dialogue to find a solution to overcome divisions and find consensus supported by all political actors and the Bolivian people, who deserve, and have the right to democratic elections.

It is of crucial importance that the political dialogue continues peacefully, in a spirit of compromise and solidarity, within the established institutional framework and in full respect of fundamental freedoms and democratic principles.

As EU High Representative for Foreign affairs and security policy, I urge all parties to set aside their differences and to commit to a solution that addresses both coronavirus-related concerns and the right of the people to vote.

A constructive and consensual approach is essential to achieve genuine national peaceful reconciliation.

The European Union is a major partner of Bolivia in promoting the economic and social development, as well as strengthening the rule of law. Health and security conditions permitting, we remain committed to observe a democratic electoral process in Bolivia.
