The Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the European Union (EU), and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany have just launched a Call for innovative proposals as part of the “COVID-19-relevant Medical and Pharmaceutical Products” (CMPP) Project. It aims at increasing manufacturing capacities for COVID-19-relevant items in the region. This includes, but is not limited to, personal protective equipment, sanitisers and disinfectants, ventilators and related equipment, and pharmaceuticals with increased need in relation to the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. This project is part of the COVID-19 response package developed in emergency by the EU and its Members States – #Team Europe - to support national health systems, protect and save lives and counter the socio-economic impact of the pandemic in the region.

The support is targeted at private and public sector companies and initiatives (e.g. University initiatives, national technology initiatives) in the SADC region. Financial grant will range from EUR 50,000 to EUR 100,000 for for-profit companies, and from EUR 100,000 to EUR 200,000 for non-profit making initiatives, through a joint contribution approach (maximum 75% of the total project costs).
