In support of global efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, the European Union’s Joint Research Centre developed control material at its laboratories in Geel, Belgium, which allows laboratories to check the correct functioning of their tests and to avoid false negatives. A consignment of this material has been shipped to Johannesburg for distribution to laboratories that are reference centres for Covid-19 in the country. Representatives of the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) Division of South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) took receipt of the material.
