High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell held a phone call with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on 8 April 2020. The call focused on the severe global impact of the coronavirus pandemic and, in particular, its effect in the most vulnerable parts of the world.

The High Representative/Vice-President reiterated the European Union’s support for the UN Secretary-General’s call for a global ceasefire. He also expressed his support for the UN Secretary-General’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Plan.

The HR/VP and the UN Secretary-General agreed on the need to strengthen coordination at global level for an exit strategy, to ensure that the pandemic actually ends and to contain the economic costs of the crisis. At the request of the UN Secretary-General, the High Representative/Vice-President agreed that the EU would do its utmost to play a leading role in the fight against the pandemic at global level.

The call was an opportunity for the HR/VP to debrief the UN Secretary-General on the European Union’s response to the coronavirus pandemic in Europe and abroad. The High Representative expressed his concern over the devastating impact that the current pandemic could have in Africa.

Both agreed that in times of global uncertainty the strategic partnership between the European Union and the United Nations remains more important and stronger than ever. As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations this year, the United Nations continues to be an indispensable forum for multilateral solutions to global challenges.
