High Representative Josep Borrell and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met for the first time in the High Representative’s new capacity in Berlin on Sunday, on the margins of the Berlin Conference on Libya.

Ahead of the conference, in which they both took part, High Representative Borrell and Secretary Pompeo exchanged views on the ongoing international efforts related to Libya and the situation in the Middle East and Gulf region. Josep Borrell informed his counterpart about the last meeting of the EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs on Libya and Iraq and the mandate he was given by the EU Member States to carry out diplomatic efforts contributing to the stability in the region.

On Libya, they agreed on the urgent need to consolidate the ceasefire, in the interest of regional stability and prosperity. The High Representative underlined the EU’s readiness to mobilise tools and resources to implement the possible outcome of the Berlin conference.

Regarding the tensions in the Middle East the High Representative reiterated the EU’s call for de-escalation and restraint. He highlighted the importance of preserving and advancing the work of the Global Coalition against Da’esh to support Iraq’s unity, independence and territorial integrity.

This first meeting in person between Josep Borrell, in his new capacity, and Mike Pompeo in Berlin follows phone calls they had in the past few weeks and will be followed up by a visit of the High Representative to the United States. The upcoming visit should offer an opportunity to advance foreign policy dialogue between the EU and US and focus specifically on ways how to enforce the transatlantic relations.
