The Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic decided today to return the case of Azimjan Askarov, the human rights defender imprisoned since 2010, to a regional court for the opening of a new trial.

Today's hearing came in response to findings adopted by the UN Human Rights Committee published on 21 April 2016.

A new process should start swiftly, in respect of international standards and taking into account the UN Human Rights Committee's findings. Pending the outcome of that process, we urge the authorities of the Kyrgyz Republic to release Mr Askarov from detention, in line with the Committee's recommendation.

Reconciliation and justice for all citizens in relation to the events of 2010 are essential for the stability of Kyrgyzstan. The European Union continues to support the Kyrgyz Republic in its efforts to ensure that all of its citizens benefit from the rule of law, democratic governance and economic prosperity.
