The event was held at the headquarters of the National Human Rights & Ombudsman Institution

On Wednesday 20 November, at the headquarters of the National Human Rights & Ombudsman Institution (INDDHH), the campaign "Playing We Learn Our Rights", jointly organized by the EU Delegation to Uruguay and the INDDHH on the occasion of the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, was officially launched.

Speeches were made by the President of the INDDHH, Dr. Mariana Blengio Valdés, and the Head of the EU Delegation, Ambassador Karl-Otto König. National authorities and civil society representatives participated in the event.

The objectives of the "Playing We Learn Our Rights" campaign are:

  • to promote human rights education through recreational activities;
  • to encourage children and young people to know the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through a memory game;
  • to ensure that children and young people are true participants and have an active role;
  • to educate children and young people regarding human rights, so that they understand that these are essential to foster dialogue, respect and values.

November 20, 2019, was also the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the international treaty that has achieved the highest ratification worldwide. Its fundamental principles - non-discrimination, the best interests of children and adolescents, the right to life, survival and development and child participation - are in the DNA of the EU. For this reason, the EU works worldwide together with UNICEF in a campaign to raise awareness about the need to promote and protect the rights of children. In Uruguay, the EU Delegation and the INDDHH are working to foster awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
