Conference/seminar

Awareness raising - Common understanding - Coordination of efforts. Dr. Carine Claeys, EU Special Envoy for Space, will participate in the 70th International Astronautical Congress taking place in Washington D.C.

Space players will gather in Washington D.C. between 21-25 October 2019 to discuss the advancement and progress of space in its various features.

In particular this year, the IAC will commemorate that “one giant leap for mankind,” the 50th anniversary of a feat once thought impossible, humans walking on the moon, and celebrate the international accomplishments and partnerships that have become the hallmarks of space exploration.

Dr. Carine Claeys will be guest speaker during the International Astronautical Federation Meeting for Members of Parliaments - "Opportunities and Challenges for Legislators in Space Exploration and Space Traffic Management" on 20 October, where she will have the opportunity to talk about the 3SOS initiative: a new public diplomacy initiative aiming at encouraging efforts towards safety, security and sustainability of outer space activities. Speaking at the World Satellite Business Week conference, recently in Paris, Dr. Claeys pointed out the urgency of deorbiting satellites: "That limit of 25 years has to be updated," she stressed, "I think the deorbiting capability in low Earth orbit should be as soon as or in a very responsible time period after that satellite is no longer operational."

#IAC2019 will be hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
