Today, the new EU Ambassador to Vietnam, Giorgio Aliberti, presented his credentials to Party Chief and President Nguyen Phu Trong in an official ceremony in Hanoi.

In the following discussion, Ambassador Aliberti extended the best greetings of Mr Donald Tusk, President of the European Council.

At the meeting with Party Chief and President Nguyen Phu Trong, Ambassador Aliberti expressed his pleasure to see that bilateral relations between the EU and Vietnam have developed vigorously over the past years, as shown by the signing and entry into force of a number of significant agreements. The EU-Vietnam Partnership and Cooperation Agreement entered into force in 2016 and is currently under full implementation, opening the way for a broadening of the partnership, including issues as varying as defence, environment, culture and migration.

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Investment and Protection Agreement (IPA) are currently much under the spotlight. Both were signed in Hanoi on 30 June. The EU is Vietnam's 4th largest trading partner and is the 2nd biggest export market of Vietnam. The EU ranks 5th among Vietnam's largest foreign investors, with 2133 registered projects worth of 23.9 billion USD.

The cooperation on defence and security – a new area of cooperation – has also made remarkable progress and Vietnam has been identified as a pilot country among five others in the Asia Pacific benefiting from a program on "Enhancing partnership in and with Asia."

On these bases, Ambassador Aliberti expressed his wish to make contributions to further strengthening the relation between the EU and Vietnam by supporting the effective implementation of the agreements, as well as promoting a stronger partnership in other fields, such as digital economy and green economy, where the EU has strong expertise and is ready to offer its assistance to Vietnam.

Ambassador Aliberti, born in Italy, has an extensive diplomatic experience in Asia, Europe and North America. He holds degrees in Economics, Environmental Economics and Public Administration, from Universities and higher learning institutions in Italy (Bocconi University), UK (Imperial College, University of London) and France (ENA).
