The European Union and the National Human Rights Commission of Korea led by the Chairperson Choi Young-ae co-hosted the two-day 4th ASEM Conference on Global Aging and Human Rights of Older Persons at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul, Korea.
Michael Reiterer, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Korea underscored the significance of a “human rights approach to aging”, and said that “senior citizens and workers are not mere statistical data but persons”. He added that “older people have contributed to society, and they have the capacity to continue in the future.”
In her opening address, Chairperson Choi also said that “many senior citizens are facing human rights problems including hate, exclusion, suicide, abuse, and discrimination; it is time that we must act together to better the lives of senior citizens all across the world.” She emphasized that this conference will discuss anti-discrimination against senior workers and inter-generation integration policies to address hate and discrimination issues.
The 4th ASEM Conference on Global Ageing and Human Rights of Older Persons is co-hosted by the EU and NHRCK as a celebration of the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October and the International Day of Older Persons in Korea, 2 October. ASEM Member States’ ministers, vice-ministers, and major government officials participated in the conference to discuss the international situation and to share their experience and best practices.
Many stakeholders, including Asian and European member states of the ASEM Conference, International organisations such as Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), European Commission, United Nations, United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), National Human Rights Commissions, and International NGOs such as HelpAge and Age platform Europe came together to discuss ways to promote human rights of Older Persons.
