The European Union would like to thank the High Commissioner for the presentation of the report on the human rights situation in Nicaragua.
The EU welcomes the report and shares its findings. The EU is following the situation in Nicaragua very closely. We remain extremely concerned about the persistent stalemate and lack of progress on a democratic solution to the current situation.
The EU believes that a meaningful and results oriented dialogue between the government and opposition, including on the adoption of electoral reforms to ensure credible elections responding to international democratic standards is the only way to address the current crisis.
Repression in all its forms must stop.
The full implementation of the March 2019 agreements signed by the government and the Civic Alliance on the liberation of prisoners and on citizens' political rights and guarantees is an indispensable next step to strengthen the constitutional rights of all Nicaraguans and to restore confidence.
The EU calls on the Government of Nicaragua to allow the return of international human rights bodies to Nicaragua, including the OHCHR.
There can be no democratic solution without electoral reform approved by all parties.
The EU stands ready to use all its policy instruments to contribute to a peaceful negotiated way out of the current crisis and react to further deterioration of human rights and rule of law.
