Speeches of the Ambassador

The European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, will pay a visit to the Lao PDR on 9th and 10th September. This is the first-ever EU Commissioner visit to the country since the establishment of EU-Lao diplomatic relations in 1975.

The visit aims at strengthening relations between the EU and the Lao PDR, and setting the direction for future EU cooperation in Laos. The Commissioner's trip to Laos is also expected to serve as a chance to further strengthen political relations and paving the way for a new strategy towards the 2030 Agenda.

Among the main issues to be discussed are partnerships on nutrition, good governance promotion and trade related assistance between the EU and Laos.

During the two days, the Commissioner Mimica is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister H.E. Thongloun Sisoulith. EU Commissioner Mimica will also launch two new programmes in partnership with the Lao government: the ASEAN Regional Integration Support-Lao PDR Trade-Related Assistance (Arise Plus) and the EU Nutrition Budget Support programme, as well as attend the handover ceremony of the new Lao Penal Code.
