Statement by the Spokesperson on the announcement by FARC dissidents to resume armed combat
The historic 2016 peace agreement between the government of Colombia and the FARC brought an end to almost five decades of armed conflict in the country. The decision of a number of former FARC activists to withdraw from the Peace Process threatens to undo the important progress made in the past years. It is, however, a decision of a small group.
The vast majority of former FARC members remains in the reincorporation process and is committed to keep the agreement. And the Colombia people expect that the implementation of the agreement continues.
The only way to properly address differences and overcome difficulties in the implementation of the peace agreement - valuable and largely successful agreement - is through dialogue and political participation.
Violence only generates more violence - to the detriment of the Colombian population, which has already seen much suffering.
Building peace is a task that requires daily work and the constant dedication of Government, former combatants, civil society and the international community.
The European Union's commitment to the peace process is and remains unwavering.
