To pave the way for the envisaged deployment and for further needs assessment, the civilian capacity building Mission organised two field trips to the border region.

The EUCAP members met with local authorities as well as civil society representatives and visited the area for new barracks, which will be constructed in partnership with EUCAP and the International Organization for Migration. The official ground-breaking ceremony is planned for October. The ground-breaking will also feature a workshop with the new mobile police unit and civil society representatives to build trust and mutual understanding.

Established in July 2012, EUCAP Sahel Niger works with around 180 staff supporting the Nigerien security forces through training and advice to fight terrorism, organised crime and irregular migration in an integrated, sustainable and human rights-centred manner.
