Statement by the Spokesperson on the recent decisions against the National Assembly and its members

Statements by the Spokesperson

The arbitrary and politically motivated decisions that were taken on 12 August by the Venezuelan Supreme Court and the non-recognised Constituent Assembly, against the National Assembly and four of its members – Tomas Guanipa, Jose Guerra, Rafael Gusman and Juan Pablo Garcia – constitute another direct attack on the only democratically elected body in Venezuela.

So far, 25 lawmakers have been accused by means of flawed processes and were stripped of their constitutionally granted immunity. A peaceful and political solution can only be achieved, if their political work is not criminalised and parliamentary activities are not repressed.

The solution to the crisis in Venezuela can only come from a negotiated process, leading to free and credible presidential elections.

National actors need to reengage in good faith and in a spirit of compromise in the Oslo facilitated talks. It is important that negotiating parties are fully supported in their efforts. They should be provided with an environment conducive to concrete and urgent results, leading to a negotiated electoral path and a reinstitutionalisation of the country’s powers.
