Statement by the EU Ambassador to Russia Markus Ederer, Head of the EU Delegation to Russia, on the extension of the arrest of French businessman Philippe Delpal

Russia`s main trade and investor partner remains the European Union. It is therefore that the Delegation of the European Union to the Russian Federation is closely following the case of EU citizen and businessman Philippe Delpal, imprisoned since February 14. The extension of his arrest until October without access to a court hearing for a possible appeal, or access to meet his family raises strong concerns and goes against Russia`s international human rights commitment (access to justice). From an EU vantage point, it is questionable to see a commercial case, such as Baring Vostok being referred to penal courts and foreign businessmen going into jail. This decision is detrimental to the business and investment climate in Russia and might have a negative impact on attracting foreign investors to the country.
