Statement by the Spokesperson on the elections in Mauritania

The European Union welcomes the election of Mr Mohamed Cheikh Mohamed Ahmed Ould Ghazouani to the Presidency of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The first constitutional transition between two elected Presidents marks an important step for the country. In a context of post-election tension, the European Union reiterates its call for all to remain calm, exercise restraint, respect the law and refrain from violence.

The European Union is ready to strengthen still further the already deep partnership that binds it to Mauritania, working together for the economic and social development of all Mauritanians, for respect for fundamental rights and for regional security.
