Temporary Press and Information Officer

The European Union (EU) is offering a temporary post of Press and Information Officer in the Political, Press and Information Section (PPI) of the Delegation, under the authority of the Head of Delegation (HoD).


Under the guidance and supervision of the Head of Political Section, the PIO develops and manages all Delegation traditional and social media activities. These include managing the Delegation social media and coordination of all delegation-generated social media outreach activities. The PIO provides media support to the Delegation and sometimes project implementers, drafts monthly political reports, press releases/op-eds/talking points, and obtains media coverage for EU activities; plans and implements Public Diplomacy engagement programs on various themes; maintains contacts in the media, government, NGOs and relevant political contacts to keep the Head of Delegation and Political Officer appraised of events and to advise the proper course of action;


Detailed description of duties:

  • Contacts and works with print, broadcast and online media to generate pro-active and positive news coverage for the EU in Malawi.
  • Organizes press related events (Interviews, special programs, meetings with the press)
  • Ensures print media appearances (op-eds, press releases, case studies, fact sheets etc.)
  • Drafts responses to media questions and talking points on various topics
  • Media monitoring and reporting
  • Drafts monthly political reports
  • Drafts adhoc/emergency reports on any political related issues
  • Generates content for and manages the Delegation's Social Media networks
  • Generates and uploads stories or any other relevant content (vacancies, tenders, grants etc.) onto the Delegation website.
  • Manages the Delegation's photography needs (Photo taking, editing, filing)
  • Coordinates Public Diplomacy events such as youth engagement activities, project launches, agriculture fairs, signing ceremonies and other related events
  • Produces Information and Communication Annual Reports and forward planning and budgeting



University degree, in Journalism, Political Studies or any related field is required.



A minimum of 2 years experience working in political analysis, journalism or a similar relevant work environment


Knowledge of IT Tools:

Proficiency in ICT (knowledge of the whole Microsoft Office packages and video/photo editing packages) required.

The vacancy is for a temporary contract of 4.5 months.
