Kurdistan Region swears in Nechirvan Barzani as new president

The Acting Head of Mission of EUAM Iraq Benny Jensen attended a swearing-in ceremony of the new president of Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) Nechirvan Barzani on 10 June in Erbil. EUAM Iraq was invited to the event by the EU Directorate of Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

 

Iraqi President Barham Salih, parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and many other Kurdish political leaders, numerous lawmakers, Iraqi figures and international Ambassadors were also present at the inauguration.

 

The President Barzani was elected on 28 May. Mr Barzani is a prominent leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the largest party in KRI and has served as prime minister from 2006. President Barzani will be the official commander-in-chief of Kurdistan Region's security forces and the de facto Head of State.  

 

EUAM Iraq provides strategic advise on civilian aspects of security sector reform for several security institutions in Kurdistan region. The Ministry of Interior of Kurdistan regional government has asked for further support and expertise from the Mission on topics such as human trafficking, domestic violence against women, money laundering, corruption and terrorism.
