10.06.2015
Text

On 10 June 2015, the European Union and the Republic of Moldova held the sixth round of their Human Rights Dialogue in Chisinau, Moldova. The EU delegation was led by Mr Dirk Schuebel, Head of Division for bilateral relations with the Eastern Partnership countries in the European External Action Service. The Moldovan delegation was led by Mr Vladimir Grosu, Minister of Justice. In line with its policy of consulting civil society ahead of its meetings on human rights, the EU met with representatives of Moldovan and international NGOs prior to the dialogue. NGO representatives were also invited to attend the dialogue as observers.

The dialogue led to an open and constructive exchange on the human rights situation in Moldova and on the country's commitment to achieving sustainable progress in this area. Following up on developments since the last dialogue in April 2014, discussions centred on a range of issues, from the fight against impunity and ill-treatment, children's rights and gender equality, anti-discrimination policy to international cooperation. The EU welcomed the good level of cooperation and coordination on multilateral issues as well as the Moldovan government's efforts in addressing gender-based violence.

The EU re-emphasised the importance of implementing the Strategy for Child Protection 2014-2020 and encouraged the Moldovan government to ratify the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages as well as to adopt a national strategy dedicated to national minorities.

The next human rights dialogue between the EU and Moldova is scheduled to take place in Brussels in 2016.
