Following the proclamation of the new electoral law, the parliamentary elections held in Benin on 28 April marked the end of the first electoral process with no participation by opposition parties since the national conference in 1990.
Efforts to reach a consensus before election day that have would allowed all the political stakeholders to participate failed. The non-inclusive election saw a record low turnout and was marked by acts of violence.
In light of the tensions of the past few days, it is important for all parties to engage in dialogue to overcome their differences and protect Benin's democratic heritage.
