Global Tech Panel and UN experts join forces to address digital challenges
The Global Tech Panel – an initiative of EU High Representative Mogherini – and the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation met together for the first time on 02 April 2019 at Nokia Headquarters in Espoo, Finland.
Bringing their collective expertise to bear as the UN Panel prepares its final recommendations to the Secretary General, the two Panels focused their discussions on global governance in the digital age, and how societies can prepare for challenges and opportunities ahead, including those emerging from Artificial Intelligence and data. They also considered practical ways to leverage digital technologies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The two Panels are united in their aspiration to mobilise the entrepreneurial drive of the tech sector while protecting the values the United Nations and the European Union have helped build. The aim of the meeting was thus to promote genuine, practical, problem solving collaboration; and the openness to build new coalitions of leaders from the worlds of government, technology, academia and civil society.
The UN Panel is due to deliver its report to the Secretary General in June.

The joint session builds upon exchanges between the two Panels on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York last September, when Fabrizio Hochschield, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres' deputy for strategic coordination, also met with the Global Tech Panel members.
The Espoo meeting was co-hosted by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by Nokia.
