In a three-day trip, a delegation from EUAM headed by Dr. Markus Ritter visited three Iraqi southern provinces; Dhi Qar, Basra and Maysan. The purpose of the trip was to introduce the mission to provincial governors and provincial chiefs of police and to further the Mission’s cultural heritage protection piece by visiting sites as well as meeting and discussing the problems with local experts.

The delegation met with key Iraqi officials including Dhi Qar Province (Nasiriyah)’s Governor and Chief of Police; in Basra met with the Chief and Deputy Chief of Police; while in Maysan met with the Deputy Governor and Deputy Chief of Police. EUAM also visited Safwan Border Crossing to Kuwait and met with the Head of the Border Crossing.

The trip included visiting the ancient city of Ur, where EUAM met the director of the site, and the Chief of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit and discussed protection of the site and recovery of stolen artefacts. Adam’s tree in Qurna was also part of the trip where EUAM met with the Chief of Police there.

The trip was very successful and another step forward to reassure the efforts to reach out to all Iraqi provinces.
