Statements on behalf of the EU

2 April 2019, New York – European Union Statement at the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly after the adoption of the Resolution on International Delegates Day under Item 125

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.

In the spirit of compromise, we have agreed to join the consensus in adopting this resolution.

Notwithstanding the undoubtedly important role of UN delegates in shaping and agreeing policy outcomes, we would like to put on record our general concern towards these types of resolutions as we already expressed in various other occasions.

We are of the view that this resolution does not provide any specific added value, while at the same time running the risk of tarnishing the public image of the UN and its delegates.

The EU is convinced that the full attention of us all should rather be on delivering on our common priorities that are dear to our citizens as outlined by the Secretary General, the President of the General Assembly and other leaders.

Thank you for your attention.
