The mission carried out on 16 to 20 February in Cairo on Yemeni women's participation in the peace process is part of the EU-funded project in cooperation with CMI-DeepRoot. The consultation with Yemeni women's networks aimed at discussing useful approaches to support women in Yemen.

The mission brought together major women's networks from the north and south of Yemen such as the Yemeni Women's Pact for Peace and Security, the Women Solidarity Network, Women for Yemen and UN’s Women Advisory Group to discuss initiatives by Yemeni women to address social and political issues contributing to the peace process and the implementation of the Stockholm Agreement. The women highlighted the importance of their meaningful participation in the peace process, and in the decision-making processes in a post-conflict Yemen. They also stressed that it would be important for them to be able to engage on broader issues related to the conflict in Yemen and to establishing peace, not just on inclusion and how to gain access to the negotiation table.

Peacebuilding through Yemeni women's networks

Yemeni women explained how the living situation in Yemen has become increasingly difficult since the outbreak of the war in 2015. Sustainable peace will not be achieved without meaningful participation and inclusion of women in mediation and decision-making processes.

The women networks in Yemen further raised the needs to bridge the gap between men and women and strengthen representativeness at local, regional and national levels as the UN Gender Inequality Index ranks Yemen 159 out of 188. Thereof, the EU sets women's participation in the Yemen peace process as a priority.

In addition to the CMI-Deeproot project, the EU funds many projects in close collaboration with UNICEF and UNFPA to support, protect and improve living conditions of women and girls across Yemen. The history of Yemen proves that women are resourceful agents of change. In these times of conflict, the EU stands with Yemeni women and aims to empower the people of Yemen to shape their own future. Following her initiative in Brussels in December 2018, the EU HRVP Federica Mogherini has declared the support for Syrian and Yemeni women as one of her 12 priorities for 2019.
