Statements by the Spokesperson

This morning, Venezuelan security forces have detained Mr. Roberto Marrero Head of Cabinet of the President of the National Assembly, and forcefully entered into the home of Mr. Sergio Vergara, member of the National Assembly for the State of Táchira, disregarding his parliamentary immunity.
The European Union urges Mr. Marrero to be released immediately and unconditionally, and holds the relevant authorities responsible for his safety and integrity.
The immunity of the members of the National Assembly should be respected in all circumstances. The Members of Parliament should be able to perform their duties free of intimidation, as well as to uphold their role and constitutional prerogatives. Such acts undermine the international community's efforts to help foster a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Venezuela.
