CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

Tonight we had a meeting in the same format as the one we used for the negotiations on the Iranian deal - the E3 + 3 and Iran that I chaired, to start working on the implementation of the agreement reached in Vienna last July at the ministerial level. In these months, our teams have been working very hard in parallel to the parliamentary review that some of the countries have undertaken internally, for example in the Congress and that is ongoing in Iran.

We have mainly been working to make sure that, be it on adoption day or implementation day, all the steps that are required for a smooth and immediate implementation are ready. So our teams have been working and tonight the ministers have taken stock of our good start.

The IAEA visited Iran recently and [Director General] Amano expressed his satisfaction with the visit. This is a good step and we have further exchanged on the actions that individual countries are taking to do their part in the implementation. The implementation and monitoring process for the agreement will require continuous engagement and commitment from all sides. We have agreed that the joint commission is going to meet soon after adoption day, so that we can, again, go smoothly and quickly.

I also have to stress that we were all rather satisfied by the fact that the agreement was mentioned by many, if not all, of the speeches today in the plenary hall as not only a good, solid non-proliferation nuclear agreement but also - indeed mainly - as a big success of diplomacy, multilateralism, and thus demonstrating that investing in diplomacy, multilateralism, dialogue and cooperation rather than confrontation brings concrete and important results. These are practices that are obviously extremely valuable in these times and practices that we will continue to invest in, both as ministers of the countries involved and as the European Union.
