The latest developments in Nicaragua are a positive first step towards overcoming the current political crisis through a negotiated solution. National dialogue between the government of Nicaragua and the Alianza Civica has been resumed, and the penitentiary regime of 100 prisoners, who had been arrested after the outbreak of social protests in the country, has been loosened. We expect all unlawfully detained prisoners to be released. Due process, as well as other legal guarantees as enshrined in the Constitution, must be respected for all prisoners.
The respect of the fundamental rights, especially freedom of expression and assembly, is essential to restore trust. A genuine and inclusive dialogue should also encompass the required reforms aimed at ensuring credible elections. We expect the government to reinstate cooperation with international organisations such as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and its bodies, and to allow for the return of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
