The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, today met with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, Ms Kang Kyung-wha at the margins of the Munich Security Conference.
While reflecting on the excellent state of bilateral relations, High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini and Foreign Minister Kang reconfirmed the importance of the EU-Republic of Korea strategic partnership, as showcased by the summit held in Brussels on 19 October 2018.
They reiterated their commitment to a rules-based international order with the United Nations at its core to address global challenges, including traditional and non-traditional threats to security.
In this context, Federica Mogherini underlined the European Union's support for diplomatic work undertaken by the Republic of Korea in promoting the inter-Korean process, as well as supporting the talks between the United States of America (US) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). She also recalled the aim of complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation, in line with relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.
Ahead of the planned US-DPRK summit in Hanoi, the High Representative/Vice-President and the Foreign Minister agreed that the positive momentum in the diplomatic track should be preserved and built upon. The summit represents an opportunity to achieve progress towards a complete denuclearisation and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
