Salvadorans break historic bipartisan politics

with credible, transparent, and peaceful elections

San Salvador, 5 February 2019 – “The Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) delivered credible, transparent, and peaceful elections. The TSE membership structure offered confidence to represented parties and uncertainty to others”, summarised this morning Carlos Iturgaiz, the Chief Observer of the EU EOM, in a press conference in the capital.

Iturgaiz explained: “The Mission has been present in the country since the end of December to observe in a comprehensive manner the electoral process. On Election Day, our 82 EU elections observers reported from 400 polling stations across the 14 departments”.

“The low-intensity electoral campaign was orderly, peaceful and calm, in spite of partisan activities which contravened the electoral silence period. Presidential candidates organised traditional campaign events and especially made use of social networks”.

“Freedom of expression and freedom of the media were generally respected. Traditional outlets provided information regularly to citizens on the development of campaign activities and the electoral process. However, balanced reporting and impartial information were rare due to the polarisation of the media sector in El Salvador. On internet, a high level of fake media, fake news, and smear campaigning was observed”.

“Our observers reported that procedures for voting, counting and the tabulation of results were followed in a transparent manner and with sufficient guarantees,” Mr. Iturgaiz underlined.

The EU EOM will stay in the country to observe the remainder of the process and will present a public Final Report with recommendations within the next two months.
