High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini met today with Mr Jose Valencia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of the Republic of Ecuador.
The High Representative discussed with the Foreign minister the latest developments in EU-Ecuador relations, stressing that they have strengthened in all fields. The Multiparty Trade Agreement, which Ecuador joined in 2017, has proven to be successful for both sides and is regarded as a major step forward in their bilateral relationship.
EU-Ecuador cooperation is being developed in important areas, such as security and development in the Northern border region of Ecuador. In addition, the EU and Ecuador are working to coordinate their positions on multilateral issues, such as human rights or climate change.
The High Representative/Vice-President and the Foreign Minister shared their concerns about recent developments in the region, notably in Venezuela. In particular, they exchanged views on the establishment of an International Contact Group, which aims to help create the conditions for a political solution to the crisis in Venezuela. Federica Mogherini acknowledged the Government of Ecuador's leading role in the regional coordination efforts to assist Venezuelan migrants and refugees. She also reiterated the EU’s strong support of national, regional and multilateral work to this end, including to address the most urgent needs of the population inside the country.
