Brussels, 23 December 2018

"Many people have lost their lives, with many more injured or missing after a tsunami hit the Sunda Strait in Indonesia on Saturday night.

Our thoughts are with the victims and all affected as well as with the emergency services working hard to save lives and help those in need. We express our condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

At this difficult time, the European Union stands by the people and authorities of Indonesia.

The EU’s emergency Copernicus satellite mapping service has been activated and EU humanitarian experts are on standby to be deployed if requested.

We are ready to offer any assistance required and are closely monitoring the situation.”
