On 18 December, High Representative Federica Mogherini held the annual video conference with all 16 EU civilian and military Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operations, which the European Union deploys in Africa, Middle East and the wider European neighbourhood.
Federica Mogherini said: "Our CSDP Missions and Operations are a pillar of the European Union’s action in the world. They make the EU a reliable security partner and contributor to international peace and stability. Our 5.000 women and men deployed around the world bring through their daily work a change to peoples’ lives, while strengthening the security of European citizens. With their resilience and determination they are contributing to a world that is safer for all of us."
The High Representative updated the missions and operations on the progress made in the development of the EU’s security and defence policy, including in regards to the Permanent Structured Cooperation, the Military and Planning Capability (MPCC) and the Civilian Compact, which was endorsed by the European Council last week.
The High-Representative and the commanders on the ground took a collective stock of progress achieved but also of current challenges and how to address them.
Contributing to international peace and stability
The European Union and its Member States implement through the EU’s 16 CSDP missions and operations security building and stabilisation measures in order to enhance human security in conflict and post-conflict areas.
5.000 women and men serve in the Missions and Operations outside the European Union, which are delivering tangible results. Some examples of the Missions and Operations’ work include:
The military operation EUNAVFOR Med Sophia has saved over 41,000 lives in the Mediterranean; meanwhile, the three mission in the Sahel, EUCAP Niger, EUCAP Mali and EUTM Mali provide support to their Host Nations in improving their capacities to tackle security challenges; thanks to the efforts of the EU NAVFOR ATALANTA and its international partners, the impact of Somali piracy today is minimal and EUTM RCA and Somalia continue to train their Host Nations’ respective armed forces. EUMM Georgia, as the only international presence on the ground in Georgia, is carrying out its mandate to provide stabilisation, normalisation and confidence building in the country, and the EU's Rule of Law Mission EULEX has in Kosovo investigated, prosecuted and adjudicated over 700 war crimes and organised crime cases.
