Just a few days before the elections on 23 December, the smooth running of the election campaign in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been disrupted by incidents, some of which have caused serious damage and the loss of human life. It is important that these incidents be fully investigated.
The European Union fully endorses the statement published on 12 December by the Spokesperson for the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly as regards the importance of a free and orderly election campaign and the holding of transparent, peaceful and credible elections.
It is essential that all Congolese stakeholders take part in the electoral process in a peaceful and constructive manner, with full respect for fundamental freedoms. In this context, the Independent National Electoral Commission has a particular responsibility to manage the next steps in the process transparently and effectively.
