Statements by the Spokesperson

The recent decisions by the authorities of Nicaragua to revoke the legal status of civil society and journalists’ organisations mark yet another step against the rule of law, civic freedoms and the respect of human rights in Nicaragua. We expect the authorities to guarantee the protection of the members of these organisations.

It is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure and protect a vibrant civil society and a free press. They are are essential pillars of democracy, and their silencing counteracts the creation of conditions for reconciliation.

The EU supports the ongoing work of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, notably the Follow-Up Mechanism on Nicaragua (MESENI) and the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI). We expect the authorities to accept the return of the mission of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the United Nations to Nicaragua.

A meaningful national dialogue with a view to identify a peaceful path out of the ongoing political crisis is essential. Only accountability, dialogue and genuine political reforms leading to free and fair elections will allow for national reconciliation.
