Press release on the meeting of the HR/VP Federica Mogherini and Foreign Minister of Colombia, María Ángela Holguín

Today I had a very fruitful meeting with the Foreign Minister of Colombia, María Ángela Holguín. We have already met on various occasions this year which reflects the quality and the intensity of the EU's partnership with Colombia.

We discussed on the EU-Colombia bilateral relations, including the EU support to the Peace process. Mr. Eamon Gilmore, Special Envoy for the peace process in Colombia, joined the meeting following his visit to Colombia.  He will contribute actively to the peace process, in particular by sharing his experience of the peace process in Northern Ireland. He will also help to coordinate the various strands of the EU's efforts to support the implementation of the peace agreement, once concluded. Other issues related to post-conflict assistance, in particular the EU's Trust Fund currently discussed with number of the Member States, were on our agenda.

We also discussed the upcoming visit of the Colombian President, Juan Manuel Santos. I am looking forward to welcoming again the President of Colombia on 2 December when Visa Waiver Agreement between the EU and Colombia will be signed. The agreement will allow Colombia's citizens to travel more easily to the Schengen area, thus facilitating two important elements of our partnership - people to people contacts and business activities.

In addition, we also reviewed the other dimensions of our partnership, which has been developing quickly over the past two years, in particular our cooperation on security and defence issues. Colombia's collaboration with our naval operation EUNAVFOR Atalanta off the Coast of Somalia has been highly valued and we are looking forward to effective Colombian participation in other EU-led crisis management operations once the Framework Participation Agreement is ratified by the Colombian Congress.

This meeting was also good occasion to discuss wider EU-CELAC relations as well as developments in the region.
