At the Steering Committee meeting of 29 September 2018, the Austrian delegate highlighted the good cooperation with the Kyiv-based training institute in view of the five years of cooperation: 'Austria has cooperated with the National Defence University of Ukraine since 2013. Over the past five years, we have witnessed the wonderful academic environment, the professional attitude of the trainers, the commitment shown by the university's management and the enthusiasm of the students who have been keen to develop their knowledge of the EU. We are convinced that the National Defence University of Ukraine, named after Ivan Cherniakhovskyi, will strengthen our network and make a valuable contribution to our training efforts.'
During the latest 'European Week' in Kyiv in October 2018, the ESDC course director, Dr. Jochen Rehrl, handed over the European Security and Defence College medallion to the Commandant of the National Defence University, General Anatolii Syrotenko. Under the auspices of the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defence, Mr. Ivan Rusnik, the General thanked the College and the Austrian Ministry of Defence for its continued efforts to strengthen capacity building and expressed his gratitude for the university being awarded the status of 'Associated Network Partner'.
With this new status, the National Defence University of Ukraine may conduct training and education activities based on standard ESDC curricula together with the college's network partners in line with the guiding principles and the Council Decision establishing the College. The university is the first training institution of the Eastern Partnership countries to be awarded this prestigious title.
