Statement by the Spokesperson on the presidential elections in Madagascar

On 7 November, the Malagasy people voted to elect their future President in a calm and orderly manner.

This election represents an important step in Madagascar's history, towards a more participatory democracy and political stability, offering a framework for the country's economic and social development.

The EU has for a long time been accompanying the democratic process in Madagascar, alongside its partners from the African Union, the UN and the Southern African Development Community.

As part of this commitment, an election observation mission, led by Mr Cristian Preda, Member of the European Parliament, was deployed to observe the electoral process. This morning the mission published a preliminary statement.

It is now up to all the stakeholders to continue finalising this electoral process in a calm environment. The EU election observation mission will remain in Madagascar until the end of the electoral process and will then publish a final report with recommendations for improving the next electoral processes in accordance with Madagascar's international commitments.
