Joint statement by the HR/VP, Federica Mogherini, and the Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, on the publication of the provisional results of the presidential elections in the Central African Republic

The provisional results of the election of Faustin Archange Touadera as President of the Central African Republic have been confirmed by the National Authority. We congratulate Mr Touadera on his victory. We also applaud the sense of responsibility of the candidate Anicet Dologuélé.
The improvements made to the electoral process by the authorities are a step in the right direction, and these efforts must continue. The EU supported the electoral process to the tune of EUR 20 million. It is now important to complete the ongoing electoral cycle by organising the second round of legislative elections before the end of March, thereby completing the transition process.
The spirit of peace and dialogue between all the Central African stakeholders must continue beyond the transition to bring, in a spirit of unity and reconciliation, a definitive halt to the crisis in the country.
The EU reiterates its willingness to continue to support the Central African Republic. It is ready to work with all of the new authorities which take office after the elections.
