The Institute of Research & Training on European Affairs (I.R.T.E.A.) and the European Security and Defence College (ESDC) successfully co-organised the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Orientation Course in Athens, Greece, from 15 to 19 October 2018. The 45 participants represented 13 EU Member States, Europol, EU SatCen, as well as third countries, e.g. Norway, Iraq and Moldova. 20% of the participants were women. .
The CSDP Orientation Course aims to provide participants with a broad understanding of CSDP. In particular, participants will be exposed to the CSDP institutional framework, current policies, as well as structures and processes.
The course consists of an eLearning part, as well as a residential session, both parts being compulsory. It will offer an in-depth analysis on Common Security and Defence Policy, taking into account the integrated approach.
During the five days course, participants had the opportunity to network, share views and perspectives with each other and with professionals in the field of CSDP, advance their knowledge and develop their decision-making skills in the context of the EU Crisis Management Simulation Game.
The schedule of the course was focused on both an integrated approach and an experiential approach via the simulation game. The topics covered included the structure of CSDP and crisis management at political, strategic and operational level, and EU Missions and operations. Some horizontal issues were also covered such as climate security, energy security and cyber security, among others.
The key note speech was given by Her Excellency the Ambassador of Austria in Athens, Ms. Andrea IKIC – BOHM on the EU Global Strategy: A Europe that protects, while also presenting the priorities of the Austrian' Presidency.
