Our Ocean, Our Legacy... EU at Our Ocean Conference 2018 in Bali

26/10/2018 - 13:30

Our Ocean, Our Legacy is the theme of this year's Our Ocean Conference, as it reflects our choices and actions to maintain the sustainability of our ocean's resources and to preserve our ocean's health. The conference will be taking place in Bali, Indonesia on 29-30 October.

Our Ocean Conference, Ocean governance

Our Ocean Conference contributes to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including SDG Goal 14 that aims to "conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources."

The conference is focused on generating commitments and taking actions to maintain the sustainability of our oceans. Over recent decades, our marine environments have undergone widespread deterioration. To turn this tide, the world must commit to sustainable action and invest in innovative solutions. Organised since 2014, the Our Ocean conferences are all about driving these commitments.

The 2017 edition of Our Ocean hosted by the European Union in Malta, generated an ambitious package of commitments

  • 433 tangible and measurable commitments
  • EUR 7.2 billion in financial pledges
  • 2.5 million square kilometres of additional Marine Protected Areas

The progress of some of these commitments is illustrated below:

Our Ocean Conference 2018 will demonstrate significant progress on past commitments and inspire new commitments made for the continuation of more concerted and integrated actions for protecting the oceans.

European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, will be participating in the conference, and EEAS Deputy Secretary-General Christian Leffler will be holding an Ocean Talk on maritime security and paticipating in the Ocean Youth Leadership Summit
