Dear Members of the Press

Dear Colleagues of the EU delegation

  • First of all thank you for being here today for our beach cleaning action.
  • Covering about 70.9% of the Earth's surface, the ocean plays an essential role for life, not only marine life but mankind as well. But the ocean is under threat: acidification, sea warming, habitat destruction, coastal pollution, overfishing and plastic litter are major threats to ocean life.
  • Plastic litter in oceans are on the rise and amount to a staggering 85% of marine litter. Micro plastics do not remain in the ocean, air and water but reach people's lungs resulting in unprecedented health issues.
  • This is the reason why the Delegation of the European Union in Mauritius is organising this beach cleaning campaign today, to spread awareness about the negative impact of plastic and sea pollution on the environment and our health but most importantly to say that we can change it. The danger is real and we have to act together – NOW!
  • This year, our Delegation is joining 40 other Delegations and Representations of the European Union around the world in the global #EUBeachClean campaign ahead of the next «Our Ocean» conference in Bali. The #EUBeachClean is a great opportunity to continue to raise public awareness about the harmful consequences of human activities on our seas and oceans. This is a matter of growing public concern.
  • I wish to thank the Honourable Minister for being present among us this morning and for the support provided by the Ministry and the Beach Authority for the organisation of this clean up action.
  • I also wish to welcome the British High Commissioner and his team as well as the representatives of the French Embassy who are joining us this morning.
  • Tourism, fisheries and food security are key for the economic and social growth of not only small islands like Mauritius but also the European Union. Mauritius stands at the front line of those challenges. The European Union is committed to continue to work with the Government of Mauritius and other stakeholders to address those challenges.
  • The positive news is that there are ways and means to keep our oceans healthy, productive, safe, secure and resilient. The EU together with Mauritius are working together to deal with those challenges.
  • We are working on the promotion of more sustainable production and consumption in various sectors patterns as a way to reduce pressures on oceans.
  • It is important to mention that commitment and acting collectively at the local, national, regional and global level is key.
  • Each and every one of us need to make it our duty and responsibility to use our oceans, lagoons and beaches in a sustainable manner by decreasing pollution and increasing the wellbeing of our ocean and us.  Respect our ocean.  It starts with us and now!

Mesdames et Messieurs,

Chers Participants,
