Three years after the establishment of the Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) as a regular course within the ESDC annual course programme, we decided to launch a Kirkpatrick level 3 evaluation survey addressed to all former ESDC PDT course participants. Our aspiration was  to get their personal feedback and impressions on the perceived relevance and value added of the PDT course.

120 out of 373 (30%) former course participants completed the survey. The respondents were evenly spread over the three academic years, reflecting the gradual increase in the number of participants. 70% of respondents went to civilian CSDP missions, reflecting the composition of military and civilian representation (see chart below). 60% of respondents were still in mission when taking the survey.

80% of former course participants confirm that the PDT helped them for a swifter integration into mission life and for more qualified contributions to the implementation of the mandate.

95% recommend the course to future mission staff. 80% consider the course to be relevant and necessary and 15% think it is essential.

The first PDT course of the academic year 2018/2019 (PDT - 10 18) was conducted from 2nd to 5th October 2018 in co-operation with the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) of Sweden. The course counted 21 participants - 13 civilians, 5 police and 3 military - from 13 EU Member States.
