Statements by the Spokesperson

The verdict handed down today in Dakar in the trial of Hissène Habré, the former president of Chad, for crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture brings justice to victims who have waited over 25 years for this moment. It should also help the process of reconciliation in Chad.

This historic trial before the Extraordinary African Chambers constitutes a major precedent for international justice and the fight against impunity.

The Senegalese authorities showed a real commitment to the proper organisation of the trial proceedings, along with the associations of victims’ families and Human Rights Watch.

The EU has consistently supported and contributed to the organisation of the trial, alongside the African Union, Senegal and Chad.
